The laboratory was created in 1972. For 45 years, the scientists of the laboratory are engaged in the study of various aspects of the influence of industrial chemicals, which take place in modern production conditions, on the health of workers and the population.

Since its foundation, the Laboratory is headed by Prof. Isaak Mikhailovich Trakhtenberg, Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences.

Main trends in the scientific activity of the Laboratory:

- determination of regularities of the body’s response to toxic effects of chemical compounds, establishing criteria for assessing norms, adaptation, pre-pathology and pathology of chemical genesis;

- estimation of toxicity and substantiation of hygienic norms (MPC and TSEL) of chemical substances in the air of the working zone;

- problem of toxic effects of chemical factors of low intensity;

- modern aspects of age toxicology;

- toxicological and hygienic studies of the effect of heavy metal compounds on the human body and the environment;

- development and substantiation of means of prevention of work-related pathology of chemical etiology;

- development and introduction of alternative models and methods (culture of cells of humans and animalss, blood plasma proteins) in toxicological studies;

- research on nanotoxicology: establishment of peculiarities and mechanisms of toxic action of nanoparticles of metals; substantiation of approaches, methods and indicators in assessing the safety of nanomaterials.

The most important scientific achievements of the Laboratory

- The classification has been developed, principles of toxicological and hygienic evaluation of corrosion inhibitors of metals, polymer compositions of lubricating liquids, medicinal preparations are determined, there have been grounded hygienic measures, presented in relevant regulatory documents.

- The regularities on the effect of low concentrations of mercury vapors on humans and the environment are established, and a number of demercurization measures has been developed.

- The criteria for assessment of the norm, adaptation, prepathology and pathology of chemical genesis are determined.

- The specificity of the toxic action of heavy metals has been investigated. The criteria of cardiovasotoxic, immunotoxic action of derivatives of lead, mercury, manganese and cadmium are determined. For a number of work on the problem "Heavy metals as harmful pollutants of the environment to humans in Ukraine: medical-ecological research, substantiation and experience of introduction of preventive measures" the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology was received (2002).

- The general criteria on evaluation of age characteristics in adaptive-protective reactions and pathological processes developing in response to the toxic action of heavy metals are substantiated.

- The effectiveness of the use of unithiol, succimer, alpha lipoic acid, pectins, quercetin, glutargin as means of preventing the negative effect of heavy metals on the body is scientifically grounded, and experimentally and clinically confirmed.

- Alternative methods and models for toxicological studies have been developed and implemented. In experiments it was proved the possibility and effectiveness of application of cultures of human and animal cells in assessment of acute toxicity of salts and heavy metal nanoparticles, disinfectants, and other chemicals.

- Based on the experimental research data on characteristics of toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics of nanoparticles of metals, an algorithm for evaluating the biosecurity of nanomaterials in vitro and in vivo was proposed, and criteria were distinguished for characterizing the level of the potential hazard of nanoparticles of metals and other nanomaterials, as outlined in the "Methodological Recommendations for Evaluation of the Safety of Medicinal Nanopreparations" (2013 ).

- In collaboration with the National Academy of Medical Sciences and National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, methodological recommendations "Hygienic regulation and control of nanomaterials in the production environment" were issued for determining the procedure of controlling nanomaterials in the air of the working zone, which present a potential danger to human health.
