Laboratory of occupational health and physiology in shift work was organized in 2011on the base of laboratories of physiology of mental work (Academician О.О. Navakatikyan), physiology of work of operators of large technological objects (О.V.Каrpenko, Dr. Med. Sci.), occupational health in field crop cultivation (Prof. Chernyuk V.I.), and since 2017 року – laboratory of occupational health and physiology of women and adolescents (Prof. V.О.Buzunov, А.Н.Каrakashyan, Cand. Med. Sci.). Head of the laboratory is Prof. V.I. Chernyuk, Corr. Member of NAMS of Ukraine).

The main direction of the research of the laboratory is identification of the physiological regularities of ensuring the professional reliability and health of a working man in conditions of shift and night work, the extended working time with the aim of improving the principles of the state sanitary legislation in the field of hygiene and physiology of work, principles of monitoring the current working capacity and the functional state of a working man, in particular - in conditions of high nervous-emotional stress, when working in the systems "man-machine", "man-man".

The laboratory carries out combined physiological and occupational health investigations on the physiological support of the work activity in laboratory and production conditions and its peculiarities during night work and in conditions of extended working hours.

Currently, the research platform of the laboratory in the national economy of Ukraine is the study of key occupations in those areas of the economic activity where shift and night work are used:

  • industry (energy, mining and quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, gas and water supply);

• agriculture, forestry and fisheries;

• construction;

• transport, warehousing, postal and courier activities, information and telecommunications;

• trade, restaurant business, entertainment industry;

• medicine;

• defense, police and power structures;

• emergency services (rescuers, firefighters, emergency repair crews).

Main results of research

Classical correlates of fatigue formation (according to indicators of the functional state of the central nervous system) have been detected in shift workers, which are considerably deepened in night hours with development of signs of the body overstrain in the EEG study.

The leading range in the age and experience adaptation of brain bioelectric activity to intense mental work is a beta range.

At the age after 40, there is recorded an exhaustion of adaptation resources and signs of increased activation of sympathetic regulation, associated with the increased risk of the coronary disease.

Detected violations correlate with the deterioration of the efficiency of processing the information flows and increase of accidents in the work of an operator-operator.

A method of correcting the body functional state by means of binaural synchronization of the work of the cerebral hemispheres and other preventive measures has been developed.

The further development of this scientific direction is in studying problems of shift work in extreme conditions (for miners, rescuers, first-aid surgeons).

Services for organizations and individuals:

• Improvement of schedules for shift work, regimes for work and rest

• Hygienic assessment of working conditions, certification of workplaces

• Sanitary and epidemiological expertise of various types of products
